Academic Year 2019 Kyushu University Entrance Ceremony

Freshly enrolled students gathered for the first time for words of advice and performances welcoming them to Kyushu University at the spring entrance ceremony on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Shiiki Hall.

Following a celebratory concert by the Kyudai Philharmonic Orchestra, President Chiharu Kubo delivered a welcome address, and Ms. Chisato Otsuka gave a speech as a representative of the 2,638 new undergraduate students.

Students attentively listened to guest speaker Ms. Ryuko Sakurai, head of the university’s Tokyo alumni association and former member of the Supreme Court of Japan, as she spoke about the importance of the university years as an opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge and to understand who they are.

This was followed by a lecture from Executive Vice President Shun-ichi Maruno. After the ceremony, the university's cheerleading club and the Kyushu University mixed chorus group gave rousing performances to welcome the new students to the university.

New students next attend Freshman Orientation over the following days before classes start on Monday, April 8.

Earlier in the day, the entrance ceremony for graduate students was held. Mr. Eisaku Kozono gave a speech as a representative of the 2,481 new graduate students.
