On November 25, 2024, an Academic Seminar featuring two guest speakers from Europe was held at Kyushu University’s Hospital Campus. The seminar was organized by the Kyushu University Stockholm Liaison Office, which was established in Sweden in April 2020 to promote exchange between Kyushu University and European universities. A full-time administrative staff member works there to expand local activities and coordinate with the university. The office held this seminar for the first time, aiming to create opportunities for further academic exchanges not only in Europe but also on Kyushu University’s home campuses.
Dr. Sjoerd Wanrooij, Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics at Umeå University in Sweden, and Dr. María Isabel Martínez-Jiménez, Research Fellow at the Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa (CBMSO) in Spain, presented on the theme of "Molecular mechanism on the nuclear and mitochondrial DNA maintenance." The seminar was facilitated by Assistant Professor Kazutoshi Kasho from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Kyushu University. Approximately 30 faculty members, students, and staff members participated in the seminar, engaging in an active Q&A session.
This seminar was planned to coincide with the 47th annual meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan (MBSJ), to which Kasho belongs, which was held this year in Fukuoka. The office will continue to increase these kinds of opportunities for Kyushu University members.
