  Dr. Kiyoshi Toko, Distinguished Professor of the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering, was awarded the 2013 Spring Purple Ribbon Medal.
  After graduating from the doctoral program at Kyushu University's Graduate School of Engineering and serving as a research associate and then assistant professor at the University's School of Engineering, Dr. Toko was promoted to full professor in the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering in April 1997. He then served as the Dean of both the Faculty and the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering from October 2008 to March 2011, during which time he engaged in educational, research-related and administrative duties. In May 2009, he was conferred the title of Distinguished Professor.
  Professor Toko is a specialist in electrical and electronic engineering. In the field of measurement engineering, he advocated the concept of "measuring taste" and made this possible by using biological membranes, and successfully developed the first taste sensor in the world. He is also committed to launching university start-ups for the commercialization and wide use of these devices, raising public awareness of the technology, and achieving further technological advancement through industry, academic, and government collaboration. He was awarded this medal for all of these great contributions.
