On January 19 (Mon) and 20 (Tue), 2026, Kyushu University welcomed Professor Del Atkinson (Applied Physics) from Durham University, UK, through the framework of both RENKEI—the Japan–UK international university consortium to which Kyushu University belongs—and the bilateral university-level academic and student exchange agreement. Professor Atkinson’s two‑day visit aimed to enhance academic exchange and research collaboration in the fields of international engagement and condensed‑matter physics. During his stay, he engaged in productive discussions with Kyushu University faculty members and students.
Professor Atkinson first met with Vice President for International Affairs Natalie Konomi to discuss a wide range of topics related to strengthening future collaboration between Kyushu University and Durham University.
Following the meeting, he delivered a guest lecture at the Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering. In his talk, he presented his latest research findings on multilayer spintronics and nanomagnetism—his areas of expertise—using specific experimental examples. The lecture was followed by an active Q&A session with faculty members and students.
After the lecture, a discussion session was held with the laboratories of Professor Hiromi Yuasa and Associate Professor Naoto Yamashita, further deepening academic dialogue toward future joint research.

On the second day, Professor Atkinson visited the laboratory of Professor Takashi Kimura (Faculty of Science) for a research meeting. Through discussions combined with a tour of the experimental facilities, the participants engaged in concrete conversations regarding the potential for future joint research.
In addition, researchers from National Taiwan Normal University, who were also on campus during this period, joined the session.
Their involvement added a distinctly international perspective and contributed to a lively and wide-ranging exchange of ideas.
