On April 21, 2026, Kyushu University hosted Professor Bruce A. Beutler, the 2011 Nobel Prize laureate in physiology or medicine, for a special lecture and panel discussion at the Centennial Hall, Kyushu University School of Medicine, the Hospital Campus.

In the special lecture, titled “How one thing led to another: Navigating a life in science,” Professor Beutler shared insights into his research experiences and his journey as a scientist. He also delivered an inspiring message to students and researchers on how to approach scientific inquiry and research. The event attracted over 500 registrants, and the enthusiasm of the audience was evident during the Q&A session, which was extended due to the large number of questions.

The panel discussion featured Professor Beutler, Dr. Adam Smith, Chief Scientific Officer at Nobel Prize Outreach, and faculty members from Kyushu University. They exchanged views on approaches to research and the structure of research teams. During the Q&A session, many students and early-career researchers posed questions regarding research and career development. Professor Beutler provided thoughtful and encouraging responses based on his own experiences.

Kyushu University expresses its gratitude to Professor Bruce A. Beutler for his inspiring lecture, as well as to the Nobel Foundation and AstraZeneca K.K. for their generous support in organizing this event.
