   平成26年3月14日，農学部附属演習林福岡演習林（福岡県糟屋郡篠栗町）内の珪化木（けいかぼく）群が，福岡県指定天然記念物に指定されました。

　珪化木とは，土砂に埋もれた木が，地下水等の二酸化ケイ素（ケイ酸）によって化石化したものです。このたび指定された珪化木群は，約4千万年前の火砕流により絶滅したヒノキ科の樹木（絶滅）が埋没してできたものとみられ，多数の個体が直立した状態で存在する貴重な化石林です。
　なお，学外の方でも福岡演習林内の散策及び珪化木群の見学をしていただけます。
